Gurmeher Kaur: What really created the Controversy?

Controversy, Controversy, and more controversies. Every day there is something new that, defines and segregates our countrymen, into categories of Anti-national/Patriots. As if our regional identities, our religion, caste, gender, race; were falling short of being our Identity.

The most recent to join the list is a girl from DU’s Ramjas College, Virender Sehwag, Randeep Hooda, BJPs Kiran Riju, Javed Akhtar, and as I write this, probably a hundred more famous names. And no, not all of these are on any ONE side. Same as the people who are reading this. If you’ve been reading any of my political commentaries over the years, you’ve already placed me on one of these two sides. Correct?

Anyway, my point is, how do we deal with controversy?

How do we understand what’s going on? Does flipping a few “News Channels” or scanning through news articles work? Or just the trending Hashtags give us, the super intelligent and opinionated folks, the complete picture?

Or our FOMO-self pushes us to believe any kind of Fake news that comes our way?

Going back to the controversy. What did the lady in question, Ms. Kaur, actually said?

I don’t know about you, but I understood what she said. Did you? If not, what was it, that you did not agree with?

If I go by what actually escalated the issue, the line, “Pakistan did not kill my father, War did” is what made Virender Sehwag tweet a response to it. Whether Sehwag saw this whole Video or just arrived at his joke by just one of the many placards this lady put up, is something we’ll never know. But going by how others also made a joke out of “______ did not ______ this, _____ did” format, I assume (apologies for my non-data driven assumptions), others followed suit.

Take the case of Kiren Rijju, for instance, without even watching the video in question he issued a statement! That’s the state of our country’s ministers.

Another factor to consider is, Gurmeher Kaur, has been campaigning against ABVP (the student wing of BJP) against their violent protests at their campus, with the hashtags #StudentAgainstABVP and #DUfightsBack!

Is the outrage from Right Wing more because of this reason? Someone digging up an old video to actually manufacture this controversy?

The fact that this is an old video, which created the controversy, speaks volume!

Gurmeher Kaur ABVP Protests

And no, I’m not putting Virender Sehwag as part of Right Wing. I’ve loved him as a cricketer and will always do.

So, what exactly did Sehwag Tweet?

Now, Sehwag on Twitter is funny. Not funny enough to get an entire click-bait article every time he tweets, but funny!

Now, I don’t agree with his stance on what Gurmeher shared in the video. But that’s my Point-of-view. Just as him not agreeing with her, is his. Just as Gurmeher is free to have her opinion, Virender Sehwag is also free to have his own opinion. Just like you and I should be. Should is the operative word here.

What followed with Sehwag’s tweet, or maybe emboldened by it perhaps, was how Gurmeher was abused and rape threats were made to her. One shouldn’t say that Sehwag was responsible for it, but when someone of his stature makes a statement, it lends a certain legitimacy to the hate campaign. Just as his brand endorsements would do.

The metrics on whether sales of Boost (which he used to endorse) varied due to his presence or not, is the answer to whether he had any effect on the abusive trolling that ensued.

Even Randeep Hooda joined in by sharing one such tweet (along with an Emoji) which celebrated Sehwag’s earlier tweet.

I’m not saying that celebrities should not share their opinions. I’d be a hypocrite if I say, Aamir Khan was okay to share his opinion on Intolerance, but a Virender Sehwag or Randeep Hooda is not. The use of “Freedom of speech” shouldn’t vary based on which side you’re on. Sure, I’d like to reiterate, this speech, when used to incite violence or racism, needs to be stopped.

The biggest problem with all of this is, the original message (the one in the video) where GurMehr Kaur talks about growing up without a father and how she managed to give up hate. She now considers herself a soldier just like her father was. She urges the leaders of both the nation to “Do their Job” and resolve the conflict and stop the War.

What a nice message!

But how many people, including the celebs, took the time to go through the message in the video, before reacting to it?

Why do we only get fixated on “what we don’t agree with” and not come together for what we do? None of you want peace with Pakistan? None of you want kids like Gurmeher to have their soldier fathers with them?

Don’t stick to the narrative which the party you support shares. At least understand what the issues are, what was the entire message.

If Sehwag, Randeep, or others, react without watching/understanding the entire message, they are at fault. If not, then they probably understood something, which I did not!

What did YOU think of the video?

An old video becomes fodder for controversy when the girl in question is campaigning against ABVP?

The Many Goodbyes

Three of us, Abbu , Ammi and me, were sitting in the train compartment, with almost an hour for the train to leave the station. Two other families also joined in,  to wait out the time, before the train heads out to Tatanagar. Each family had their son or daughter dropping by in a weirdly similar fashion.

And we think our lives are any different.

Each of those conversations, be it in bengali or bhojpuri or Dakkhani we spoke, were almsot about the same things. Parents giving their kids their advice, while the kids seem to give even more of it to them.

Goodbyes at stations are not sad. I mean, the more you travel away from family, it becomes part of what they call life. You’re not sad or emotional at the thought of it. Or maybe, I’ve become indifferent to it and adopted a more realist approach over the years.

I still recall how every-time summer vacations would end and I would have to head back home. Tears would run down like a waterfall. I can very well imagine how funny it must have looked to others. But the fear of not meeting my cousins for another year was just terrible.

And that was the time of writing letters and sending greeting cards!

With WhatsApp, Video calls and social networks, the issue of connectivity has been blown away, and the realization that distance hardly matters has seeped in. Especially when it comes to people who really matter.

As the train was about to leave and I stepped out of the train saying my salaam, other kids (yes, we’ll always remain kids), also followed suit. Waving their parents off, as the train gathered speed, we just couldn’t catch up.

Random

Yesterday, I missed posting an update! I did write one long-ish post (Oscar Movie Reviews for 2017) but just couldn’t post it.

Reason ?

Long story short, I was really tired. To the extent that I slept while working on the post and had no idea when I had slept off.

The early morning cycling trip with a couple of friends and a little extra walking in the evening proved to be the reason behind it. Not that any of you missed the post, but I did feel bad to have skipped a day.

Yes, even this post that I’m writing is a little late, but hopefully this will be published before I hit the bed. But then, as I posted earlier, I’m usually late.

Although, I wouldn’t like to be late tomorrow morning. Need to drop my parents at the Railway station for their journey back home and with the Uber/Ola strike thing still going on, have no idea how I’m going to manage. Have already received so many Autowaala rejections in the last two days that it’s still hurts.

And yes, the Oscar’s are hours away, I remember screaming/scaring people in the office last time when DiCaprio won it last time. I am rooting for Casey Afleck and Manchester by the sea, this time. But, might skip the screaming if they win. But, hey, please watch it irrespective of whether they win it or not.

Off to catch a few good hours of sleep! Adios!

Academy Award nominations 2017: Review of all the Oscar Nominated Movies

The Oscar 2017 is just a few hours away. Unlike other years, where I watch these after the award ceremony, I tried my best to finish at least the Oscar Nominated movies (Best Film Category).

Each of these movies are good in their own right. I do have my favorite of it all, which I’ll rank at the end of this post.

So, here they are, 8 Oscar nominated Movies, with their short-reviews and in no particular order.

The Hidden Figures:

In the backdrop of a time when USA’s space agencies were fighting the space race, the country had racism embedded in its system. Even the country’s top minds working at NASA were not untouched by it.

Oscare nominations 2017 The Hidden Figures

The story is about 3 Black Women mathematicians, working at NASA, who are brilliant but the system doesn’t give them the ‘space’ to grow more than what they currently are. Even when they visibly excel in doing what they do. While one woman struggles to complete her work because she has to use the washroom which is a mile away on the other end of the campus and she being black, cannot use the same ones as the other ladies. Another woman who is due promotion based on her work is not able to break the ceiling and similarly another is interested in joining the engineering team but cannot do so with her current degree and the required degree is not available in a college which allows black woman.

The characters played by Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monáe are representations of the racism at that time and the portrayal is brilliant.

Even though the struggles vary in their own, the underlying theme is of how these women overcome these issues and make themselves heard.

Ably supported by Kevin Costner and Jim Parson, the movie has some amazing insights into that era. Watch it for the uplifting real-life story.

Hell of High Water:

The movie is about Bonding. Two brothers, played by Ben Foster and Chris Pine, bonding over a series of robberies they carry out to save their ranch they lost to a bank. Two Sheriffs, one half-Red-Indian half-Mexican, played by Gil Birminghim, and the other, a typical cow-boy played by Jeff Bridges, trying to crack these series of robberies.

Oscare nominations 2017 hell-or-high-water

This movie is like the yesteryear’s’ cowboy confrontation. The battle, between the two, builds up through hell and ends on a calming high. The idea of “hell or high water” or to push to achieve, no matter what it takes, is what drives both the brothers-in-crime and the sheriffs.

The story exposes a lot of things along the way. The ageing sheriff’s push to go with his instincts and inability to see sense in his partner, the varying forces which drive the brothers to go on a robbing-spree and a lot of male-bonding along the way.

Watch this movie for a classy cow-boy feel with a no-nonsense story to accompany it.

Hacksaw Ridge:

I must admit that I’m not a fan of war-movies and yet I found this to be an entertaining watch. Probably this was more about the conviction to stick to one’s value-system than giving in to the demands of the war. Not to mislead you, this movie sure has some of the most gory-war blood-bath scenes like all others before it.

Oscar nominations 2017 Hacksaw Ridge

The movie is about a devout Christian Desmond Doss who believes that he does not have the right to kill anyone but joins the US Army to fight the Japanese. The struggle to make his fellow soldiers, his superiors and even the judges at his Court Marshall is what makes the movie stand out.

With a good ensemble cast to go along, Andrew Garfield, brings out a sensitive performance while playing the protagonist who is adamant to not even pick up a Rifle.

Watch it if you’re a war-movie fan. Watch it even if you aren’t one. I’m sure you’ll like it in parts.

Arrival:

Arrival as a plot has a lot of similarities with Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, although not too complex like it. It appears to be a cross-section between the sublime Interstellar and a tad-melodramatic Martian. Capturing similar genres of space-cum-time-travel, Arrival is entertaining nevertheless.

Oscar nominations 2017 arrival

Arrival banks heavily on its lead, Amy Adams, to anchor the story. The curiosity build-up, thanks to the interactions between our lead and the “aliens”, retrenches your attention. You’re always on, “what’s more to it, than this?”

The plot centralizes on a world where 12 UFO’s have landed on earth and naturally scared the world powers of the time. There’s a temporary cease-fire agreed upon before attacking the Aliens. Meanwhile, Amy Adams, who happens to be a language expert, becomes part of the team that will try to get a response to the ultimate question, “What is the purpose of your visit?” from the Aliens.

Apart from Amy, we also have, Jeremy Renner, who appears to be just another spoke in the wheel even though he does enjoy ample screen time.

Arrival throws up questions, about empathy, and perhaps that was the purpose of it, however without the investing performance from Amy, this could have easily fallen flat.

Cinematography is particularly interesting and breathtakingly raw, which makes it believable.

Arrival is entertaining, however, it misses out in threading plotlines with casting, which this story definitely deserved.

Watch it for the sheer joy of Amy Adams bring to life the story, all on her own.

Fences:

There are very few father-son movies which are THIS real and bereft of melodrama than fences. In a never-before-seen avatar of Denzel Washington, this movie hits you in small bouts of realization much after it is over. It is as real as it can get.

Oscar nominations 2017 Fences

In one particular scene, Denzels friend, Jim, playe, say Stephen Henderson, “Some build fences to keep people out, others build it to keep people in”. This right here, sums up the philosophy that the movie tries to project. The entire movie has been shot inside one such fence.

Denzel plays a father working hard to make ends meet, week-after-week, bringing-in his paycheck to support his wife and kid, and a son from his previous marriage. He is a typical dad who is trying to push others to not make the same mistakes he did and the lessons he gained as a black man in a white-dominated-world where they live. As expected, this becomes a cause of conflict with his son who wants to play football. Going by this, you’d assume it’ll be like the hundred-odd-movies that talk about dreams, reconciliation and how to take inspiration out of it. Fences is different. Not in its story, but the treatment and the layers it touches and unearths with each scene. One conflict at a time.

The question of whether it is love that binds families together or a sense of duty is the central theme that Denzel, the director tries to help us ask!

The ensemble is brilliant. From Viola Davis putting in a wonderful performance to Denzel Washington acing it in the shoes of a tough father, the movie is filled with heartfelt performance.

It brings in a sense of reality and talks about racism and issues concerning the Black community at a family-level.

Moonlight.

There is a sense of nostalgic addiction we have with certain places, time and the people we spend it with. They stay with us over time and shapes who we are. Moonlight captures the journey of a child with troubled childhood, finding solace in the company of a friend, being betrayed and how it shapes up his life.

Oscar nominations 2017 Moonlight

Moonlight works in parts, part disconnected, part getting its story heard without shouting, and mostly in the silent stares. It talks about the difficulty of coming out as Gay and how without the support of a family, it gets even difficult. It also talks about troubled childhood, drug addictions and seeking an identity for yourself in a world of unknowns.

The plot takes shape on how a young Chiron lives with a drug-addict mother who cannot take care of him, and is visibly bad at it. He meets a father-figure in Mahersha Ali , who tries to help him get through  difficult childhood before the struggling teenage years begin. The movie is about the three phases of Chiron’s life and his coming-of-age to become a man.

The best parts of the movie lies in its silences where the characters speak more. Special mention for Trevante Rhodes, playing the older Chiron, for an amazing performance.

Watch this to feel the struggles of a child confused about his sexual identity in a difficult neighborhood and the how it makes us feel.

Lion:

Lion, based on a real story, hauntingly captures the emotions of a young man’s life who yearns to get back to his mother and brother. Evoking this on the screen, with a solid performance by Dev Patel, has been done brilliantly by director Garth Davis.

Oscar nominations 2017 lion

The longing and emotional outreach of a kid who got lost and adopted by an Australian couple is a story that will work for any audience. Lion takes you to the start of the story, on how the kid got lost, and doesn’t add up any surprises on its way. What it does well is, brings out the thought-processes of each of its cast.

The young Saroo, played by Sunny Pawar, puts you in his shoes all along the journey and the able photography depicting the sad reality will scare you.

You come to know of why the adopted parents of Saroo (Dev patel), played by Nicole Kidman and David Wenham, decided to adopt and even at the expense of difficulties associated with raising adopted kids, they were ready for it.

The journey of Saroo’s life is filled with people who try to exploit him and the people who support him, including his on-screen girlfriend played by Rooney Mara, and each of these characters project and represent ideas in themselves that vary with great length.

Watch it for the amazing performances and a real-life story capturing the struggle of a kid who lost his way home.

La La Land:

A musical from Hollywood? Well, yes, there aren’t many in recent years and probably makes La La Land stand out.

Oscar nominations 2017 la-la-land

The plot is about a girl-meets-boy, both struggling to make it big. One is trying to make as a jazz player and the other as an actress. One gets a break and things get weird, expected? How this affects their relationship and how they come together to change it, is what La La Land is all about. However, this being a musical, there’s of course more to it. It is about the moments in-between. The songs, the cinematography, the costume and all-of-together in a story that flows like music.

The chemistry between Ryan Gosling and Emma stone is like a hot knife on a butter. Smooth.

It isn’t something you’ve not seen before but it is the treatment and the ability to connect with the audience is what makes La La Land special.

Watch it if you’re a hopeless romantic who lives by collating small moments in life.

Manchester by the Sea:

This is easily the Best movie at the Oscars this year. Tragic and Sad, and yet so real. Casey Afleck makes you connect with the distraught and tragic protagonist of this story, liking no one else could.

The movie is about a family. A family that was. Two brothers, one diagnosed with cancer and his wife leave him and his son. Another brothers’ wife leave him too. Why? Since it comes in the later part of the movie, I’ll not spoil it for you.

The movie doesn’t centralize itself on this, but on the emotional state of its characters, who are trying to deal with these emotions, in their own way. How death changes people and how people deal with these emotions, is what the movie is all about.

The movie touches a wide range of emotions without putting an extra effort. It is very real and believable.

It is that kind of sad movie which you’ll love to watch, drain out your emotions and connect with your own family. Watch it!

Now, that you’ve read all the reviews, my favorite of them all is, Manchester by the Sea. Although, I do have a feeling La La Land might win.

Which ones did you like ?

Fotu

Whenever I notice someone keeping their own picture as their wallpaper, I feel so good about myself.

We all have shades of narcissism embedded in us, but this group, takes the cake.

And leave aside any picture. A properly edited picture, which sometimes, even has a quote added somewhere. We might even be able to see, “Picture edited and filters added by” section soon as well.

You guys are awesome! No, really!

You can add the picture on facebook and probably like it yourself as well. I mean, let it be out there in the open that you like yourself more than anyone else. Or maybe even add a quote about yourself ? You can even use your initials as if you’re pulling this quote off the internet!

And while you’re at it, why not also tag all your friends on the picture? Don’t let them miss any chance to not see how good you look! And you know what, even their friends, on whose timelines, you’ll be visible too.

You can even create a list of people who liked your picture and compare it with historical data, and then send a reminder asking why they haven’t like that photo yet!

And hey, while you’re at it, why don’t you send a message to friends to hit the like button ? I mean, what are friends for ?

Story: The Phone Charger

He searched for his phone next to his pillow, while trying to open his eyelids, adjusting to the sunlight from the window.

“Good Moornnning!” she walked in with her morning tea along with her visibly routine excitement, like there’s a good day awaiting.
“I’ve put it on charge”, she said, while putting the morning newspaper on the table next to the window, blocking the sun rays from his face.

“You do know I need to check my mails in the morning.” He rhetorically cried stretching his eyebrows.
She ignored him like the page3 gossip and headed over to the editorials. Folding the paper to read, glancing across to the bed, to see him look irritated. A controlled smile escaped her eyes.

“Why do you do this?”

“So that your phone doesn’t run die while you’re out!”
And before he could add-in a rebuttal. She quickly added, “…. No, you’ll forget your charger too”.

“But I do….”

“Even your power bank isn’t charged!”
Damn! This woman knows too much! , he thoughtfully murmured.

“What did you say?”

“I said…”

The sunlight blurred his eyes, adjusting his eyelids, he got up from the bed to answer only to find no one.

He sat there in silence looking at the old newspaper by the window.

The phone rang from a distance. Near the charging point. She was a good teacher.

Opening up to new Ideas

We strive to lead an ideal life. An all-perfect life. We envision ourselves to be the magnet that attracts all the good things we like and repel the ones we don’t. Practically, we’ll have to be polar opposites to make this happen. But let’s not get into the technicalities. Bhaavnao ko samjho.

We hate certain ideas and the mere thought of it makes us scream in our heads. Sometimes even out of it, as well. Yet, we find ourselves in either the company of those ideas or share an unavoidable bed with ideas which won’t let us sleep.

But just to think that an ideal world was even a possibility is naive. We can strive for one. But it’d remain just that. The push to reach perfection when it doesn’t exist.

Assuming, it does. Hypothetically. It would be boring.

Imagine being in a state of content and not having the thrust for that elusive perfection ?

Boring, with a Capital and Bold B!

And hence it becomes interesting and vital to be accepting of even things we don’t like. Providing the unliked things with shelter. Being accommodating. Of course, resistance is critical. Accommodating doesn’t mean amalgamating. Not always.

Difficult and yet, important to open ourselves up to new ideas and possibilities. Our ideals aren’t permanently hard-coded in our brains. They change. For the better. And even for the worse.

But standing at the same place, isn’t termed progress. Right ?

Spelling out the problems

Spelling out your problems isn’t something we want to do. You simply expect people to understand it. The ones close to you, have to get you.

Your emotions aren’t your social media updates where you spell it out for the world. Your outrage, cribbing, excitement and joy, are emotions that you can share by attaching it to an event.

Can and Should. The operative being the operative words here.

Like you don’t have to explain that you’re tired after work and might not want to talk too much. Or maybe when you’ve put on the earphones at work, you don’t want to be disturbed for anything non-urgent.

People need to get this!

Carrying a name-tag of emotions to explain things to adults is just terrible. There should never be a “What happened?”.

Understanding each others’ headspace is so terrible important. Be it your family, friends or your roommate.

Sure, one cannot expect this from everyone. But at least a few?

Over time, can we at least give it a shot to understand people and make an effort to get others ?

The Conversations In My Head

I have this weird mannerism of imagining conversations before they can happen. My reveries are essentially filled with a multitude of thoughts scattered asymmetrically.

The conversations in my head are usually far more interesting than the actual ones. The ones that never happen. And it isn’t restricted to moments when I don’t have anything worthwhile to do but even when I’m in the middle of something.

There is an entire parallel world running in my head. Most of the times.

Either I’m blank without any shade of thought or peeping into imaginary conversations. And it’s not involuntary. I’m always in control of it, which makes it sound less weird, right?

Believe me its fun!

I know, it is like living in a bubble, for a while. Before that bubble bursts in your face. However, people do surprise you once-in-a-while.

There’s an image of people which we have in our head and the one we actually get to see. It is like our online/offline personalities. A lot of this has to do with what we project ourselves as and what we really are. The difference evidently lies in the subtleties.

The thoughts and conversations in my head are just overtly visible projections of people, which they knowingly/unknowingly resonate through their personalities.

I love to get into the psyche of people. To understand what goes on in their head. I’m more interested in the “why” of what they do.

I won’t call it empathy. It is like an entertainment for my head.

The conversations in my head.

50 Days of Writing Daily: 5 Things I learnt

This is the 50th Post for this year! *raises an imaginary bat*

And surprisingly I don’t have anything in particular to share today. Hence, I’ll ponder on what I learnt about my writing process in the last 50 Days.

Start with a one-line idea:

When you think of writing a post. Don’t delve too deep on structuring the entire post. Just form an idea in one simple sentence and start writing. As you let it flow, you’ll end up forming a structure that’s going to convey your thoughts, the way you want it to be. Key is to make yourself understand what you’re writing. Try loving that and the readers will like it too.

Get rid of the draft:

I tried writing on a few topics but words just didn’t come out right and instead of saving it in the draft, I deleted them. I’m trying to get rid of my habit of keeping things in draft. They remain untouched even after days, they just don’t see the light of the conclusion.

Let it flow:

and one of the biggest lessons I’ve learnt while writing everyday of this year is, “let it flow”.

Flow is the key to writing. You can write a 300-word piece in over 5-10 minutes and it could take an hour when you just don’t feel right with the topic. Literally, the pen just stops moving.

Timing is the key:

Sticking to a schedule is very important and keeping a deadline is critical. I’ve tried to finish off my posts before the clock strikes 12! Of course, I haven’t always been able to do that. But the rush to push out the content before the deadline does add an extra ounce of caffeine in your body. However, if you plan on writing something serious, please take your own sweet time. This advice is just to maintain continuity in writing.

Don’t bother about Grammar:

I know. All you Grammar Nazis (not all, but a few of you) must be cringing everyday on reading my posts with bafflement. Maybe even rolling your eyes in wonderment for some extra effect. And I do understand grammar is essential and extremely important. I’m perhaps committing a cardinal sin in belittling its important. But, for the purpose of continuity and getting your natural flow in writing, it is necessary to push grammar (and typos) in the backseat.

Bonus Tip:

Always try not to trust these listicles and find your own process. Everyone has their own process and it might not work for you. Of course, there’s no harm in trying it out.
