Joy of Giving…

Raheem walked out of the mosque, with a series of beggars pestering him to give alms. He gave some of it, from whatever he had, calculating at the same time on what all other expenses he had. After having parted with some of it, there were still a plenty of folks around which didn’t got anything, he walked away thinking wish he had some more to spare.

Anvesha came down from the auto-rickshaw, only to find a series of kids vying to get anything that she could spare, more so that “change” coming her way from the Auto-walah. Having given some to the kids holding her chunni, she tried to go her way to office. Only to find more kids running towards her. She again took out her purse and gave a few more to the others and then fled the scene, only to save anything more that she possessed.

It’s not like every other person has that innate quality to share what they have. But when we are talking about being positive and sharing something positive, let’s just stick to that. Right?

Raheem and Anvesha, both are the everyday youths that you see around. It may be you, your friend, your siblings, or even the one roaming around the street. They have this desire to contribute to the society that they are part of, to help it stand upright and be counted, to see smiling faces all around. They don’t want to be caught up in a situation where they have to “calculate” as to how much they ought to give to the child holding their arms or to women standing in the heat outside a mosque/temple. They don’t want to see a part of society be suffering in front of their eyes and they become the ones who are not doing enough.

This “not-doing-enough”  bit, irks most of them. They want to, but lack the means to achieve the desire to get the socially unequal part of the system become a part of it.

But then, what all options do they have? Wait to become rich and then contribute towards this initiative?

What if there is an alternative just right here, for students, for the youth to go ahead and indulge in helping the societies’ downtrodden in becoming equals.

ICONnect: Joy of giving week

Xavier Institute of Management and Entrepreneurship brings about an opportunity for the young bloods in a first of its kind event called ICONnect in Bengaluru that gives students and young professionals a golden opportunity to ‘shadow’ a leader of their choice. XIME has always emphasized on giving back to society and this is a great way to do so. XIME also has a very active Social club called Xseed, which has been organizing events from time to time to help the neglected strata of society.

ICONnect is actually a measure to celebrate the Joy of Giving week, the largest philanthropic event in India by far with 2012 witnessing: 2 million+ people participation from all walks of life 80+ cities 800+ events registered (from small individual events to those involving >100,000 people) Rs 30cr+ generated in donations of cash and materials Millions of volunteer hours WHO MAKES IT HAPPEN? Everyone! Media, NGOs, corporate, schools, colleges, celebrities, govt & public. 100% volunteer driven. Each city/town creates its own “core team” that reaches out and inspires people to participate. Various individuals and groups create their own “giving events”. With some support from the core team. A few large events make it possible for everyone else to “participate”.

What ICONnect has for you?

Well, a double bonanza in the form of not just contributing to the cause of society as well as get to interact with your favorite business leader. The Students and young professionals would have a phenomenal once in a lifetime experience. Students and young professionals will bid in a one week window starting from October 2nd and the highest bidders among the students and young professional will get to spend one day with the leader of their choice. The bid money will be channelized to a charity of the leader’s choice. Events in line with ICONnect have been conducted by the IIMs and ISB at the national level. Our event will focus on leaders and bidders in Bengaluru. This also presents an opportunity to the business leaders to fulfill their CSR initiatives in a manner, which involves others from the society into the process, adding  true value to the Joy of “giving”

ICONnect: Joy of giving

While money is being raised for a novel cause, benefiting you in the process, it also presents a great example for others to use a platform like this, in order to bring about the much needed change that our contrastingly divided society, where the gap between poor and rich still continues to stand and laugh at our faces.

Let the change begin AND the Joy of giving be enjoyed.

You can follow the developments on the ICONnect website or like the facebook page to keep updated on the issue.

Ye Saali Internship 2: 10 Things every salesman should know!

One month. It has been one month since I started with Yeh Saali Internship.  One month of Hardcore Sales, in the shining sun and accompanying loo. The journey has been quite a learning experience. And no matter how much I crib, or curse it, it has put in a lot of lessons inside my head.

And yes, there has been respite from the heat from the past week. Rain has what brought about this particular change and yep, the happiness is visible across all faces. Work, of late has made me get used to it. Now, even the irritating customers, do get a trademark smile in return for their frown. The art of smiling back even in the worst of cases (of whatever I’ve faced till now) is now what I have gained control of.

Learning the tricks of the trade is confusing, especially here in Sales. Reason being, although all these customers use the same product, might have the same problems as well, their solutions vary to a great extent. You just cannot generalize among your clients and that is something that I’m getting used to.

There is a lot to learn that I got through this one month of Yeh Saali Internship as a Salesman.

10 things that every salesman should always keep in mind:

  1. Talk to your immediate boss, regularly. To the extent of telling him each and everything that you do during the working hours. It would be great to take him in confidence and even show-off a little of your skills to impress him. Always laugh at your boss’ joke, no matter how bad it may be.
  2. Don’t tell your products’ price upfront. Talk through the benefits, the customers’ requirement, problems, etc and then bring in your price. The moment you say the price, the customer starts making the decision to buy or not to buy. If he didn’t like the price, he won’t properly listen to what you say afterwards.
  3. Pay special attention to his problems, even though how idiotic they may sound. When you listen, they will listen to you.
  4. There are many customers’ who won’t have any product knowledge, but will have lots of reasons of blaming you or your products. Explain them, politely. And never ridicule them when they throw any baseless criticism, tackle them calmly.
  5. Have detailed knowledge about the products you sell, price, warranty/guarantee, after sales service, bulk-discounts, etc are must.
  6. Know what all things your competitors’ product range lacks or has more than your products. Will keep you grounded when it comes to exaggeration and also will help tackle loyal customers of competitor.
  7. Never be hesitant to pitch your products, there are opportunities everywhere.
  8. Distributors’ or retail outlets having products similar to yours’ are hotspots where you can convert prospects into your customers. Can also be used to clear doubts regarding your products.
  9. Always end a conversation with a handshake and do put on a smile. It does work wonders, on your second call, your chance of selling increases. And always be ready to visit/call the prospect regularly.
  10. And last, but not the least. Enjoy selling.

PS, there are plenty more things that a salesman needs to do. These were the ones that came to my mind, feel free to share tips in the comment section.

Happy selling!! 🙂

Yeh Saali Internship

With sweat pouring like there is a shower over my head, and the fan above waits for electricity to give it a new leash of life, life here at 40+ degree Celsius Jamshedpur is tasking. Not to mention, getting second thoughts of doing my SIP here itself and add to that one in Sales!! Or as my mentor puts it, hardcore sales!!!
A lot is happening around here, of course along with it, my paseena flowing like some waterfall!! And sad part is, at the end of it all, I won’t even be able to use the phrase, “paseene ki kamai” because there won’t be any kamai of sorts as well. Poor me 🙁
The only respite is being at my hometown!! But then, apart from that there is none. It is that time of the year when none of my friends are here. After all, who stays in Jampot, during May-June when its no less than a heater with loo giving it company. Even I have never stayed here around this time here, from the time I can recall. It used to be the days of Summer Vacation at my Naani’s place along the shores of Bay-of-Bengal in Gopalpur!! Childhoods’ most treasured vacation along with my cousins!!! Sigh!!

And today, here I am. In the captivity of my home, refusing to go out even for a second!! Even to the extent that a friends’ invite to barge in the nearby theater for a movie seemed tasking!! That too on a Sunday!! And this is so not me!! This is the summer heat, coupled with the never-ever-done-work-of-sales as part of my Internship talking its head out.
To talk about, #YehSaaliInternship, by which my SIP shall be named henceforth, It would be wrong to say I wasn’t expecting something like this. But going by my previous records of things rarely meeting my expectations, you have certainly disappointed me. Yes, you Saali Internship!!
Apart from the usual struggle to try and convince people into buying our products, there are quite a few other things I am being subjected to. To jot down a few, it includes, asking questions that they don’t feel like answering, to weird looks and crazy questions they put on you, to trying to be extra-nice to colleagues and bosses, to actually gulping in liters of cold drinks just to be able to move around from one place to another as if in the middle of a computer game where an energy drink will help me clear the next level and of course trying to be patient, so much that even though someone makes you wait in the scorching sun, a “hello with a token smile” is a must!!
There are positives to look forward to as well, with watching myself actually learn something practical under good guidance. Yes, not all bosses are bad and mine certainly is not at all. At least if I am judging correctly in a matter of very few days. Where these “few days” have seemed like eternity.
Coming back to this “Summer Internship”, makes me wonder as to why on earth they had to be in summer? Why not in winters, huh??
And for XIMEans like us, who are back from an amazing International tour, to do this just after that was actually on hindsight like bakre ko halal karne se pehle wali feeling, of which we just forgot in the midst of the fun over there.
Anyway, there’s no point complaining too much (I’ve done whatever I could), just to focus on the job at hand with of course a smile and a promise that in future would always treat salespersons very politely.
Happy Internship!! 

Dove- Story about my unimportant hairs

It was just a normal day, of a hectic schedule to round-about classes here and there. Got informed by someone, that there is a package waiting for me. With curiosity, opened the box right away, only to find a beautiful looking white bag. Opening further, to my utmost surprise, it was Dove!! Dove, as in Dove shampoo and Dove conditioner.

And then it struck, I had just playfully applied to free samples for it, to use them and review it. Although, I did felt that they were very generous enough to do so.

To say the truth, I didn’t intend to write any product review for it. Free stuff, use it and enjoy, is what I wanted.  But, yet you find me writing about it. no, it’s not about the prize that I might get, for the contest, “beautiful ends to your beautiful braids”, which ultimately some women will win.  It’s just a simple review of what I used all these days with the Dove shampoo and conditioner.

To start off, I have never been a big fan of cosmetics, especially hair-care products. It’s not about being a male, but just that the chemicals and stuff have a weird effect. Although, with the kind of lifestyle that we ultimately end up living, it does take up some space. Yes, I should add that I had never used any dove product before, and I used this only because it came for free.

But, I was surprised!! In a pleasant way, of course.

Why ? well  http://www.dove.in/en/Products/Hair-Care/Split-Ends-Rescue/Dove-Split-End-Rescue-Shampoo.aspx is the answer for that.

To tell you about my hairs, there’s not much. It’s short and sometimes it grows a little too dense before the barber works around the bush with much difficulty to give it a decent look. It’s not completely curly, nor straight, but uneven with its ends a little weird. With dust and pollution following me, every now and then, over the years, dandruff as well as hair issues been there like forever.

I remember how I used to be the centre of jokes for my hairs in my school. Although, I used to resent them back them, but looking back, it was so much fun. But yes, at the expense of my poor hairs. Poor, lacking moisture and dry as a desert. Some of the many jokes that used to be centered around that time, included, as to the “level of difficulty that the barber will have to give me a haircut”, “how my combs would never be able to withstand usage, once I make them go inside my bush” and of course” getting my hands cut, if I make my hand go through them even once”.

To, technically define my hairs,

–>  They are dry lacking moisture.

–> They are thick and wavy.

–> They have unusually weird ends

Now, using Dove has surprisingly brought about little changes. And this includes, the Dove shampoo and Dove Conditioner as well

–> Moisture, a little of it, if not a lot can be felt and they don’t feel dry.

–> The thickness is still prevalent but the waves have somehow become more structured and look neat.

–> And the weirdness in the ends is almost replaced by the changing quality of my hairs.

And believe me, I am sure, when I go to the store to buy out a shampoo. It would definitely be dove.

However, if your issues are serious, then you should visit a dermatologist who can help you with your issues.

Water Management

Taking me out of bed to pick up the brush is a task in itself. Trying to do that early morning, is an addition that one hardly ever wants. At least for someone like me, this addition doesn’t sound good. And yes, I should add, lazy people like me. Or to make it sound more decent, those who do not consider themselves as “morning people”.

Now, when starting your day like this is tough enough to make you realize how “tough” our life is, imagine the day starting with a whole lot of expletives coming out of your Colgate-filled mouth.

Well, don’t mistake me for doing that because of the hardships that I mentioned before, about the getting-up and brushing stuff, as there is a reason.

The reason is a newly added course on Water management in our curriculum and which happens to be an exclusive one at that. Only for boys hostel!! Exclusivity in this is something I wouldn’t like to have. (And of course, there is a whole lot of exclusive stuff I would like to possess, but we’ll talk about that sometime later).

Coming back, onto why this course (let’s call it that), made me end up gulp in some of the colgate and mouth words which I won’t like to myself hear, and that too at the start of the day. Imagine, opening the tap and hearing some peculiar sounds of water doing some sort of dance on strange music and refusing to come out. Yea, it does.

The “morning chores” somehow got over with difficulty, difficulty of running to-and-fro to other rooms to gather the precious stuff. Even more precious than the “Lord of the rings’ ring” and no, it’s no effing exaggeration!! Believe me.

If, this was just an orientation (or a trailer if you are watching a horror movie) of what was to come next, or what important lessons we were to “gain”, then it is very apt to put it that way.

When I addressed myself as a lazy bum, I actually forgot to add about the company that I enjoy over here. “It’s not just me” is what I will have to add too. Filling up water bottles is a task in itself, not to mention the fact that how your bottle, if it’s filled with the “precious”, is a magnet far more powerful than anything else.

Now, imagine, your bottle not being looked upon as the “precious”. Poor lad.

Damn, those water purifiers’ man!! Who have nothing much to do, except being empty.

Anyway, to talk about the water management course, I must say, it’s working quite well.

Some value has been added to our hostel-life with it. Like,

  •  Instead of being lazy, we are even more pumped up to go into “water hunting”.
  •  We have learnt to properly store the “precious” and with this slowly becoming a regular thing
  •  We also have become dedicated to put more efforts into conservation and excel in this course of management.

Hope, you are enjoying by being part of this. If not, it’s never too late to start because this “precious” is someday going to make you run even more.

Hari Das: a man with determination

Here is another story of a beautiful soul, whom i met during my SUPA in the series of posts on “Beautiful People“.

HARI DAS

Hari Das is the son of Vijay Das, a farmer who lives in Chatra district and sometimes also doubles up as a worker in Kolkata, Hari Das is the eldest among all his siblings. But being the eldest in the house is not always beneficial, and Hari learnt it the hard way. He could not start his studies, until the youngest brother in his family started going to school. Even this couldn’t have happened if his endless crying paid no heed into his parent’s ears. And all of this just for the sake of getting admitted in school in order to study.

Hari kick-started his new life of learning something new, with eyes full of enthusiasm and a determination in his heart. After studying in primary school, there were doubts in his mind, as to how he would further continue his studies as it would be very difficult to be mobile now. But there was alittle ray of hope coming his way. While he was leaving, due to his headmasters’ efforts, he got a tricycle. But Alas!! He had to stop his studies for a year and could only resume it when he got admitted in a hostel in Pandepura. And then he completed his 10th from there only.

Returning home after completing his 10th, was again a setback for him as with various issues cropping up in his family, he had to take a gap of a year from his studies. But, God bless this young lad, who didn’t just sat back with disappointment, but started teaching. He took tuitions near his home and then after a year joined intermediate studies from whatever he could earn while teaching kids. Around the time, when he passed 12th, he joined hands with Jharkhand Viklang Manch (JVM). After getting associated with JVM, not only he got benefited but also helped others. JVM brought about a whole lot of change into his life. It brought about a new sense of bonhomie for his disabled brother and sisters. His idea of being an important entity of society who is helpful to his own brethren was finally seeing the light of the day.

After coming to Jamshedpur for computer training in Indo-Danish Tool Room (IDTR), he strives to learn computer and would like to work in a metropolitan city someday. His learning here is not just limited to computer education but also learning from his peers too. He not only learns here but also teaches others too regarding unity. His belief in himself and the way he has shaped himself, is surely going to take him places.

Beautiful people- Babita kumari

Beautiful people- Babita kumari

The world was thrown apart for this young girl when she was in class 5. Her father, Late Jagdish Yadav, died, leaving her and two younger brothers in her mother’s arm.

This is another story from the series of Beautiful People that I met in Jamshedpur.

This story is about Babita Kumari. A girl who is trying to make a difference to her life through her courage and zeal to achieve something even with disability.

Her father’s death resulted in her leaving studies for one whole year. But it was due to her uncle’s help, she was able to resume her studies. But, in order to make her study and feed the family, her brothers had to leave their studies and start working. It was important that someone supported the family of these orphans. Babita’s studies weer possible due to the efforts and support from uncle and then brothers.

She is currently continuing her studies and is currently doing B.A (Part-2) in Zoology hons, when this post was being written.

Over the years, she had also started to support her own studies and even help her family, whatever little she could. She not only wanted to study but also help others like her progress.

She was associated with Nav Bharat Jagriti Kendra, which is a project for disabled. She worked there for 3 years and they also funded her studies through the same. She was also was associated with another platform for disabled, where she worked as office assistant. Through her associations, she also ensured many disabled people register themselves to get a disability certificate. This ensures they get benefits out of government schemes, pensions, wheel-chairs, etc.

Joining Jharkhand Viklang Manch(JVM) was a step in the same direction and she continued her efforts in terms of helping the disabled. JVM gave her a voice to be active in not just in nearby places but outside of it as well. Her life as a person with disability has gone through troubled waters many a times, and yet she has rose through the struggle becoming stronger through it. If losing her father at a young age was a setback, trying to continue her studies was difficult too. It is with determination she was able to push towards achieving something.

With an opportunity to learn computer education in Jamshedpur at Indo-Danish Tool Room (IDTR), she left her ongoing computer course and joined here, as this seemed a better prospect. She wants to be a computer literate and get a job. She says, computer education is going to change her life and she is trying her best to learn it. With support from teachers and fellow students, she expects herself to reach new heights.

This is one of the many stories in a series of Inspiring ones about Beautiful people fighting hard even with Disabilities. Supporting them should be our priority and helping them in whichever way we can, will definitely aid them.

Do share this story of courage.

KAVITA KUMARI- An unfinished poem…

In my series of Posts on some beautiful people I met during my SUPA journey. Here comes the second one. Story of an ambitious girl who aspires to become the “Son of her father”

BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE…..

KAVITA KUMARI- An unfinished poem…

With ambitions of becoming the “Son of her father” and to fulfill her mission of self reliance, Kavita Kumari, has always displayed a smiling face even in the midst of various difficulties. Kavita is the daughter of Shri Ramji giri and is second daughter in a family of five daughters. Coming from Ithkhori in Chattra district, she was never interested in studies. Her interest area used to be in household work and tailoring. She never took her studies seriously, until her sisters showed faith in her determination of doing something for the family. With a prayer to excel always on her lips and with faith bestowed upon her by the family, she was determined to keep up to everyone’s expectation.

Her disability was never an issue for her during her schooling and she used to do almost everything like the normal kids around her. After completing her Intermediate examination, she also worked as a “Care Giver” under Jharkhand Siksha Pariyojna, where she was meant to teach 6 disabled children. In course of time, she even started a Tailoring centre, something that she loved doing herself. While using the tailoring machine, she felt as if using a computer and felt proud in the process too. Also, by doing these little works and supporting her family even though in a very limited way, she felt proud of meeting the expectations of her family. Something that she had always wanted to do was getting reflected in her father’s eyes when she used to talk with her. Her “becoming the son of her father” dream was slowly and steadily gaining shape.

In 2008, she began to be associated with Jharkhand Viklang Manch (JVM) and a lot of her work started post joining JVM. Not only she became more active and concerned regarding other disabled people, but also took measures to help them in every possible way she could. She used to locate different disabled, whether she knew them or not it didn’t mattered, and tell them about the various benefits that are there for them and would even help them to avail those too. She believes that by helping others, all of them will be together as a force and would strive towards success.

Not that her life has always been following the same upward path of success, but there has been downfalls too every now and then. Her eyes get all moist while she recalls one of her life’s incidents. She had decided to only marry someone if she loved a person. And she did loved one. But it was difficult for her to hear rejection just because of her disability. That No coming from a certain special someone made her feel different, different from other girls out there and it was all due to her disability. Even with her heart broken, she vowed to not let that hamper any off her activities. Getting to know about learning at Indo-Danish Tool Room (IDTR), was one of the happiest days of her life as she had always wanted to study outside her hometown.

She believes a person should take time for herself, only then others will help him. Her desire to help herself and others have taken her this far and is bound to achieve even more. Here at IDTR, she tries to teach others about self reliance and learn a lot from others too. She is determined to progress ahead in her life to finish what she has started, the mission be useful to her as well as others too. The journey to finish her Poem on a happy note has just begun.

Beautiful people- “Prakash kumar, the Gabbar singh..”

Something in me had always wanted to be associated with Social work and development, and when an opportunity came my way as part of SUPA (Socially Useful & Productive Activity), a college project; I was excited. Although I would be wrong to not say that spending some time home was also one of the reasons.

Red Cross society was my destination, and with whatever I knew about the work it does, I was pretty excited. But it all came down, when I went there to meet them to formally start the proceedings. The guy over there tells me, “do hajaar lagega aapka yahan karne ke lie apna project”  Shocked to reply anything, I just listened onto his blabber on how he described the whole work that I have to do and even told me that I need to bring my own vehicle to go different places. And even looked me in disgust when I told him that I don’t have one. I just asked him, “Sir, ye sab to voluntary work hai, isme paise kyun?” and pat came the reply, “ye sab to aap apne swaarth ke lie kar rahe hain, voluntary kaise hua……” and then he again started with describing how “his work” for Red cross is voluntary and how mine is for my “swaarth”. I walked out after that, saying my obligatory dhanyawaad.

After 3 days of scanning most of Jamshedpur, I finally found my match and hence my SUPA began with Jharkhand Viklang Morcha(JVM) and which went quite great. Along the way, I met some very amazing people and just thought about giving some time to let the world know about them. I interviewed many people during the course, people with disabilities but the strong determination. Instead of me, teaching something to them, they taught a lot to me.

From this post onward, I’d be telling some of the stories that I could cover. Hope you enjoy reading.

Starting with Mr. Prakash kumar, the Gabbar singh…

Me with Gabbar Singh

Courage and determination can best describe this man named, Prakash Kumar, Son of Shri Manti Mahto, a farmer who lives in Dadi village which is around 5km away from block Simaria. Being a disabled makes you very helpless and if your own family does not support you then that helplessness grows. But for Prakash, even these problems couldn’t stop him from doing what he wanted, i.e, Studies. After realizing that only he can support himself when it comes to studies, post-2004, he even started working at a jewellery shop. But even with that he had to leave his studies for 2 years.

It was not that he never received any support from anyone. His friends were always supportive of him, no matter what. Difficulties arising out of transportation for attending classes were taken care of by his friends and even for purpose of studies, they were always there for him. Although same cannot be said about his family. One particular incident he describes sadly of is of a day just a day before filling his forms in a particular class. There was some construction work going on in his house and in order to bring in raw materials, money was kept. When Prakash asked for money, to be given for form, his father and brother refused. Although, he promised to pay them back out of his own money in a day or two, still they refused to part ways with the money. Such was his family’s attitude towards his studies that if he wouldn’t have pressed himself hard, he would just be sitting idle in his home.

Prakash

But it is his sheer determination to prove everyone who thinks of him as someone who cannot do anything, is taking him forward. He has been the happiest when he gets good results in the exams that he appears, even with a lot of difficulty. It instills him with a sense of achievement when it comes to getting good results. His struggles has not only benefitted him, but also gave him the confidence to help out others in need too. he is not only a leader among the disables but also helps people get information regarding the various polices and schemes put forward by the government for them.

He has not only helped many get benefits out of government schemes like pensions, Indira aawas yojna, getting tricycles, etc but also strengthened Jharkhand Viklang Manch by working towards its goals of maintaining unity among the various disables. Even at Indo-Danish Tool Room (IDTR), he tries to be a leader of all the students and helps them accordingly too. Fondly called as the “Gabbar Singh” by his fellow students, this lad wants to sail high and is leaving no stone unturn.
